Rodney Stephens is chair of the English department at Howard Payne University. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Jelly Bucket, The Avocet, and ISLE. His wife is from Spain and he lived there for five years. The Bonfires of San Juan, featured in “Hogueras,” may not get as much attention as running with the bulls in Pamplona or Las Fallas in Valencia, but they offer an even more provocative vision for artists in the contemporary world. This summer solstice festival is best enjoyed with wine, cheese, and a willingness to lose yourself in the rhythms of Alicante, Spain.
